Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat are both ‘grass roots’ Dawa movements established by Sunni South Asian Muslims (of traditionalist Hanafi background and the Shah Waliullah tradition) to revive Islam and promote the basics of the religion. Both Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat are based upon the Quran and Sunnah, the Fiqh of the Four Sunni Madhabs and both accept the validity and value of Orthodox Sufism. Both Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat are involved in the establishment of Mosques and education and both promote the Sunnah as a way of life. Both Tablighi Jamaat and Dawatul Islam are non-political, international, peaceful organizations that were founded on the basis of the merciful propagation of Islam.

Dawat-e-Islami was founded in Karachi Pakistan in the year 1980 CE by the Barelvi scholar Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadri Razawi damatbarakatohomulaaliyah Since then the organization has grown greatly and is now active in over sixty countries worldwide. The Tablighi Jamaat was founded in 1928 CE by the respected Deobandi scholar Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandlawi and is now active in over 120 countries around the world. Dawat-e-Islami hold a large annual international congregation every October in Multan, Pakistan. Many thousands of Muslims from around the World attend. Tablighi Jamaat also holds several large gatherings. These are held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Raivand, Punjab, Pakistan and other places all over the world.

Dawat-e-Islami is founded on the message of the South Asian Sunni Hanafi Barelivi Ulema, whilst Tablighi Jamaat is founded on the message of the South Asian Sunni Deobandi Ulema, but both groups (whilst ostensibly promoting a particular interpretation of Islam) invite people of various backgrounds to join them. The Tablighi Jamaat is particularly intersting in this area as it avoids theological issues and focuses upon promoting the basic practices of Islam (Muslims of many schools of thought have been known to study with the Tablighi Jamaat). A saying of Maulana Ilyas (damatbarakatohomulaaliyah) was ‘Come Muslims! Be Muslims’ in reference for the need of the people to practice and live by their religion as opposed to just being Muslim in name.

Dawat-e-Islami has its central headquarters at Madani Markaz, Faizane Madina, Karachi, Pakistan, whilst the Tablighi Jamaat has its international headquarters at the Markaz, Hazrat Nizamuddin West, Delhi, India. Both movements have several regional headquarters. Dawat-e-Islami has a good presence in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Australia and South and Eastern Africa. Unlike Tablighi Jamaat Dawat-e-Islami has basically no presence in the North African countries. Both Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat are active in the USA and Canada, but unlike Tablighi Jamaat Dawati Islami is developing a notable presence in Central and South America. Dawat-e-Islami has had a presence in the United Kingdom for more than 15 years. The European headquarter is Faizan-e-Medina in Bradford, where they currently hold their own seminary. Tablighi Jamaat has been in the UK longer. As far back as 1978 CE work was started on the construction of Dewsbury Markaz (also in Yorkshire England). The Markaz would become a major Mosque and a seminary offering the Dars-i Nizami education.

Like the Tablighi Jamaat Dawat-e-Islami offers Islamic education at levels varying from the basics of the religion to the Dars-e-Nizami training (leading one to become an Islamic scholar). Dawat-e-Islami also offers a Dawa course and advanced courses to train Muftis and Qaaris. Furthermore both Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat teach that murder or harming innocents are hateful sins and they are against terrorism. Tablighi Jamaat has been accused of links to terrorism, but these accusations have been soundly disproven as malevolent slanders.

Amongst other methods of Dawa, Dawat-e-Islam publish books and have a TV station but the Tablighi Jamaat methodology is somewhat different and is focused more upon door to door preaching. Tablighi Jamaat missionaries have a methodology of going out in Jamaats (of 10-12 people) to preach and study in different areas. The Jamaats travel to different towns and villages inviting the local Muslims to come and study with them. The basic message of the Tablighi Jamaat is based upon six pillars. These are that every Muslim should recite Shahadah correctly in Arabic and understand the implications of the Shahada, they should learn to pray Salaat correctly, they should learn the basics of the religion and do Dhikr, they should respect fellow Muslims and human beings, they should work with the proper intention and honesty and they should spend some time travelling studying and preaching. In addition they should also avoid time wasting in sin and folly.

Differences between the Tablighi Jamaat and Dawat-e-Islami stem from the philosophical differences of their schools of origin (Deobandi/Barelvi) and the mode of their establishment (Tablighi Jamaat founded to spread Maulana Ilyas’ understandings of the basics Islam and Dawat-e-Islam founded largely in response to the sucess of the Tablighi Jamaat along with a feeling of the need to spread the Barelvi understanding of Islam). Historically many Barelvi type Muslims have been angry at the Tablighi Jamaat as they have seen it as a mission designed to convert Barelvis to the Deobandi school of thought (with its more cautious approach towards issues of intercession and bidah; including avoiding asking directly from deceased Walis, avoiding Milad and Urs etc). Barelvi anger at the Tablighi Jamaat was simply an expression of their anger at the Deobandi movement that originated with certain unfortunate Fatawa from the scholarly founder of Barelvi’ism, Sheikh Ahmad Raza Khan Qadiri (radiallahoanhu).

Both Dawat-e-Islami and Tablighi Jamaat are working for Islam, but they have different methodologies and philosophies and thus different strengths and weaknesses. One area in which the Tablighi Jamaat has been accused of weakness is that the group avoids inviting non-Muslims to Islam. This cannot be said of Dawat-e-Islami which has worked to invite many non-Muslims to Islam (yet the Tablighi Jamaat has also been a help and a support to many new Muslims). Another area in which the Tablighi Jamaat has been accused of weakness in in relation to the problem of a minority of people who learn Islam through the Jamaat starting acting to all intents and purposes as if they are scholars - despite their not having Ijazas in the Islamic sciences. On the other hand critics of Dawat-e-Islami have accused the organization of promoting certain innovated beliefs and practices that cautious Orthodox Muslims ought to avoid.

Whatever criticism these two organizations may recieve it cannot be denied that through them many Muslims have been inspired to give up lives of sin and to adopt the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahoalaihiwasallam)) as their guides to life, living, praying, fasting, performing Hajj and doing acts of charity that they would not have considered before.

When I saw this post the name jumped off the page at me, I know this Abdur Raheem Nelson he used to live near me in Stoke Newington, but moved a couple of years ago. He's a black brother who follows some Sheikh whose not 100% Sunni.

Its just his sort of thing, he's trying to make everyone the same and deny there is a difference between Deobandis and Sunnis. He doesn't say that Dawati Islami has copied off TJ, but I think this is what he is implying. He always used to come out with this sort of stuff.

When I read it it didnt seem to me that he was saying they were linked though, but this sort of thinking confuses real Islam with Wahhabis in people's minds and is very dangerous.
