(We sent him) so that you will not complain about having no one to tell you of what is good or warn you of what is bad. Now a bearer of good news has come to you. Allah has power over all possible things." صلى الله على النبي الأمي وعلى اله وصحبه وسلم 20. verse 119 of chapter 2 إِنّا أَرسَلنٰكَ بِالحَقِّ بَشيرًا وَنَذيرًا ۖ وَلا تُسـَٔلُ عَن أَصحٰبِ الجَحيمِ "We have sent you (Muhammad) to give glad tidings and as a warner. 8. Sufi Spiritual Leader of Naqshbandi and Shazali Assassinated in Daghestan By Wahhabis / Salafi / Ahle Hadith / Khawarjis Dogs of Hell - 28-Aug-2012 As Daghestan's Sufis buried their spiritual leader on August 28, the sea of almost entirely male faces seemed to stretch to the horizon around his grave in the small town of Chirkeisk. Observers put the number of mourners at more than 100,000 -- an almost unheard of crowd for a public figure in this small North Caucasus republic. But Said Efendi Chirkeisky, born 74 years ago as Said Atsayev, was no ordinary mortal to his followers. He was the spiritual leader of Daghestan's official brand of Islam, Sufism, and regarded by his admirers as inspired by God. Now, his death at the hands of a suicide bomber threatens to add new fuel to the cycle of insurgent violence and security crackdowns that is gripping this corner of the Russian Federation. The suicide bomber who killed Chirkeisky and at least five of his followers on August 28 has been identified as Aminat Saprykina. Russian media quoted security officials as saying she was the wife of a fundamentalist Islamic militant who has long been on the police wanted list. 'Tragedy For Daghestan' Aleksei Malashenko, an expert on Islam and the Caucasus at Moscow-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, called Chirkeisky a pillar of Dagestan's establishment-backed traditional Sufism, which is being challenged by Islamic militancy. "He constructed good relations with the secular administration. He was very popular. He had pupils among the officials and even some ministers supported him," Malashenko says. "So, it is a tragedy for Daghestan because it shows a deep split between traditional and nontraditional Islam." Malashenko says that Chirkeisky, who headed both the Naqshbandi and Shazali religious orders in Daghestan, had an estimated 10,000 to 50,000 religious pupils. Many of his pupils are members of Daghestan's security forces, creating a strong nexus between the official religious establishment and the republic's civil administration. The religious leader's popularity was based on both his record as an Islamic scholar – though he personally neither read nor spoke Arabic – and his success as an author of spiritual poetry. He was also widely regarded as having a good disposition, patience, and willingness to receive any who came to him for help. But Chirkeisky's frequent criticism of Wahabbism made him an assassination target for insurgents. He survived an assassination attempt in 2007. Salafi extremists termed him a regime puppet and militant websites welcomed his killing. 'Vicious Circle' Liz Fuller, a Munich-based Caucasus expert who writes the "Caucasus Report" blog for RFE/RL, sees the assassination of Chirkeisky as part of a vicious circle of revenge killings in Daghestan that has continued for more than a decade. She says the violence began in earnest after 1999 when Chechen guerrilla leader Shamil Basayev launched an incursion into Daghestan with the intention of proclaiming an independent North Caucasus Islamic state. "After the invasion was repelled, the Daghestani parliament passed a law outlawing Wahabbism, which is the derogatory term for Salafism," Fuller says. "The police took it upon themselves to be the guardians of that law and over the years the militants have targeted almost exclusively the police and the police have retaliated by targeting not just the militants but anyone who is Salafi, even if they are absolutely peaceful. And this, of course, has become a vicious circle." Numerous other religious figures have been killed over the past two years in Daghestan, including the imam of the central Masjid in the city of Buinaksk in March. Clashes with militants and attacks on police occur almost daily. With the death of the Sufi spiritual leader, the lines between the insurgency-related violence and tensions between the republic's majority Sufi community and still small but growing Salafi community risk becoming more blurred. His death sets back recent attempts by religious leaders on both sides to increase dialogue between their communities. Fuller notes that Chirkeisky was a central part of those initiatives. "There have been two attempts at dialogue between the two [religious communities]," she says. "There was one in the spring of last year that did not go anywhere and a second one that started late April this year that had Said Efandi [Chirkeisky's] backing. They drafted a sort of memorandum on how they would speak of each other with respect, and on how they would do what they could to try to defuse the tensions between them. But both the insurgents and the Interior Ministry set about sabotaging that." Daghestan observed a day of mourning on August 29 for Chirkeisky and other victims of the suicide bombing. State flags flew at half-staff and all entertainment programs on TV and radio were canceled. http://www.rferl.org/content/daghestan-sufi-leader-suicide-bombing-/24692153.html
  9. http://allafrica.com...1208271088.html Egypt: Nation Condemns Attacks On Sufi Shrines in Libya The Egyptian Darul-Iftaa vehemently condemned attacks on the tomb of 15th-century scholar Abdel Salam al-Asmar and a historic Masjid in the Libyan city of Zlitan, about 160km (100 miles) south-east of Tripoli. Ultra-conservative Islamists wrecked the Sufi shrine with bombs and a bulldozer and set fire to al-Shaab al-Dahmani Masjid in Zlitan early on Friday24/8/2012. In a statement Sunday27/8/2012, Darul-Iftaa said such acts were "criminal and ignorant" and against the teachings of Islam. The Shaab Masjid housed close to 50 Sufi graves inside and outside, the tombs of Libyan Sufi scholar Abdullah al-Shaab and a martyr who fought Spanish colonialists.
  10. The destruction of the Sufi shrine in Zliten Libya - 26Aug12 Tripoli, 26 August: http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13302 The tanks at the checkpoints set up right after Tripoli were enough to give away that something was wrong — as indeed there was. Only 15 kilometres outside Zliten, the town famous for its Sufi shrine, the sounds of distant explosions told people waiting in the long queues of cars at the last check point before Zliten what was happening. A fight was underway and with each loud explosion taking place fairly regularly its intensity was clear to everybody. The explosions came from a 106mm gun. It was not until the small hours of the Friday morning that it was evident the clashes which had started as a tribal issue had engulfed the whole city. The explosions increased and intensified after midnight and the sound of small calibre weapons were audible, like anti-aircraft weapons — compared to those of 106mm. The local radio stations in Zliten were broadcasting war-time programmes and blaming the chaos on Qaddafi supporters. It was reported that a green flag had been raised in the city centre and that the revolutionaries were now trying to clear the area. A warning was then issued that 100 tanks and hundreds of armed cars were on their way to Zliten in support of the Qaddafi forces with plans to seize the town. It turned out to be not true. Photo: Umar Khan The radios were calling for all revolutionaries to come out and fight for the town. It was 2 a.m. Suddenly one of the stations switched to airing Takbeers on repetition whilst the other congratulated the people that reinforcements have arrived from Misrata and Tripoli. This too never happened. The explosions kept happening at regular intervals through the night. The loudest took place around 5 a.m. on Friday morning, followed by another loud explosion 15 minutes later. A group of people in cars drove to a building nine kilometres west of Zliten — I was told it was a water plant — raided it and set it on fire. A petrol station was also set alight a few hours later in the same area. Random explosions kept occurring after sunrise. The security officials then raided a compound where a building had been burned earlier. They kept shooting at the empty buildings and setting rounds towards the sea. They were, unintentionally, firing towards the part of the valley where some friends and I were camping. It lasted just about five minutes. We lay on the ground the whole time to avoid the bullets that were flying over our heads with the distinctive ‘whizzing’ sound. The road towards Zliten was empty although there was some activity inside the city. Houses were bullet ridden, used shells scattered all around the area suggesting the intensity of the fighting that took place. It had started as a clash between two branches of the local Awlad Al-Sheikh tribe following the killing of a man from one of the them. The tribe are descended from Sidi Abdel Salaam Al-Asmer whose shrine was the focus of Friday’s battle. Fighting escalated on Thursday to a fully-fledged gun battle involving heavy weapons after both sides called in allies from outside, some coming from Bani Walid. This angered locals and exacerbated the conflict. Meanwhile Salafists in Zliten were already involved in the conflict and used the chance to demolish the shrine. Belonging to a Sunni school of thought that sticks to a strict interpretation of the faith, they view the idea of praying to saints and considering them holy as polytheism and the practices going on in such shrines as un-Islamic. The keeper of the Zliten shrine was also accused of black magic, however, no evidence was shown. The dome in the main round-about, named after the marabout whose shrine was destroyed, was also destroyed. Photo: Umar Khan The building with shops across from the shrine was totally burned and so was a mobile shop in an adjacent street. The streets were littered with used shells and debris, the houses were bullet ridden and there were two burned-out cars in front of the shrine. The holes in the walls suggested the use not only of 14.5mm anti-aircraft gun but the heavier calibre ones as well. When the Salafists attacked the shrine and the dome in the square, heavy fighting took place but they were large in numbers — almost all the brigdades were involved in the demolition. The popular version, however, is that the shrine was demolished by one of the two branches of the Awlad Al-Sheikh tribe after some people came from Bani Walid to avenge the death of the man killed. Another version was that the clash was not tribal but that Qaddafi supporters were involved in the demolition. It was later clear that the people involved in the destruction of the shrine were not pro-Qaddafi. This seems to have been an attempt to cover up the issue. Speaking while efforts to exhume the body were ongoing, the fighters present at the shrine said that 16 people had been killed in the fight and that where they were was nothing less than a ‘frontline war’. This too may have been an exaggeration, although they faced stiff resistance from people trying to stop the demolition of the shrine. The situation around the area of the Asmariya Islamic University complex which houses the shrine was all the more chaotic not only with the heavy presence of armed men but with several people visiting it. Their faces were grim and they recited prayers to make their discontent clear. There was a great deal of argument between the visitors and those demolishing the shrine although all ended with both sides saying “May Allah guide you to the right path” to the other. The shrine was incorporated in the Masjid. The fighters destroyed the dome by planting explosives on it and then the grave was destroyed by a jack hammer. The Salafists and their supporters tried to exhume the body in order to rebury it secretly so that there would be no longer be shrine in which to pray. They dug down five metres but did not find anything — and nothing has been said since about a body being found. The Masjid was also badly damaged, with the minarets sprayed with bullets and missing chunks of masonry. The building next to the Masjid, said to be a library, was totally burned. Until last week, the shrine was visited by thousands every month with people coming not only from different parts of Libya but from other countries. They used to seek blessings and offered sacrifices to have their prayers heard. The Salafists had tried to attack the building earlier this year but were repulsed by local fighters and then agreed to have the issue decided upon by the Grand Mufti, Sheikh Sadek Al-Ghariani. This time they succeeded because they did not give any time for the authorities to intervene. They also had the support of the local brigades who were present at the time of demolition, a crucial factor they lacked the last time. The destruction of the Sufi shrine in Zliten was not the first of its kind in free Libya. According to reports it has been going on from early summer last year. The first shrine in Tripoli was demolished days after the fall of Bab-al-Aziziya. The demolition of shrines continued till earlier this year when a fatwa from the Grand Mufti halted it temporarily. The events of Zliten, as expected, have emboldened Salafists elsewhere and the first blow came in the capital itself where the shrine in front of the Radisson Blu hotel was demolished on Saturday. The Sidi Sha’ab Masjid housing the shrine was very badly damaged and is likely to be leveled. The bodies from the two shrines on the same road as of the Sha’ab Masjid were also exhumed but the structure was left intact. The destruction of the Sufi shrine in Tripoli is more controversial as it was carried out under the eye of official security agencies. The road was blocked by the police cars with dozens of policemen present. The move was immediately condemned by the head of the National Congress, Muhammed Magarief, who promised said that those responsible will be dealt with. Surprisingly, the condemnations came almost two days after the shrine was demolished in Zliten. The incidents of Tripoli might have been avoidable, if the authorities had responded more quickly to the Zliten incident. The deputy Prime Minister, Mustafa Abushagur, also condemned the incident calling it an act of crime and saying that those involved would be held responsible. However, given the state of security in the country and the fact that no criminal has so far been held responsible for any crime since liberation, it is understandable that some people have no fear of being held responsible for their acts or that they can feel nothing is going to stop them doing what they want. Voices are now being heard belatedly saying that these incidents must serve as a wakeup call and that there needs to be an immediate crackdown on any unsanctioned activity in the country.
  11. Tripoli, 29 August: Staff at the madrassa believe the Salafists intend to return to destroy the remaining graves. Salafists have destroyed almost 30 graves at an historic madrassa in central Tripoli, in the latest spate of religiously-motivated violence to hit Libya. The Othman Pasha madrassa, named after its Turkish founder, was attacked by scores of armed men in the early hours of this morning, who used automatic drills to dig up the graves and looted several historic texts from the school’s library. The madrassa also serves as a boarding school. “They came around 2am. There were about 200 of them and they were heavily armed”, one of the madrassa’s staff told the Libya Herald. “They destroyed all the graves except two, and we think they will come back for those. There are around 30 graves, in which Othman Pasha and his family are buried”. The man, who asked not to be named, said the Salafists were intending to take all the books from the madrassa’s library, but were persuaded not to by dismayed members of staff. “They took about half of the books”, he said. The Salafists also cut down a tree in the middle of the school after accusing people there of worshiping it. Over the past week, Libya has been rocked by a series of violent attacks perpetrated by Salafists on religious sites they consider idolatrous. Three historic Sufi shrines have been targeted, in Zliten, Misrata and Tripoli, and it is reported that a number of mosques in Tripoli’s Old City have also been attacked in the past few days. Throughout the assaults, the Supreme Security Committee, the body tasked with maintaining Libya’s internal security, has done little if anything to prevent the destruction. It has been widely reported that leading members within the organisation sympathise with the Salafists’ objectives http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13436
  12. Tripoli, 25 August: http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13209 Another Masjid has been vandalised by Salafists. The Sidi Sha’ab Masjid opposite the Mahari Radisson Blu hotel overlooking Tripoli harbour was attacked around dawn this morning, Saturday. It appears that heavy equipment was brought in to smash the shrine of Sidi Sha’ab which is housed in the Masjid, an important Sufi teaching centre. There are reports also that a Sufi Masjid in Misrata was also attacked this morning. The scene later this morning at the Sidi Sha’ab Masjid was startling. There were lots of police, SSC and other officials blocking the road in front while a massive digger was smashing the building. Apparently, this was said to be preventive — to stop it from being attacked further. This is not the first attack on the Masjid. An attempt earlier this year to destroy the shrine resulted in a demonstration outside the Mahari hotel and security forces being brought in to protect the tomb. On Thursday night, the shrine of Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri in Zliten was also destroyed by Salafists. Umar Khan writes from Zliten The (Zliten) Masjid has been badly damaged. The dome in the main square was also destroyed. The conflict between Zlitenis and the Awlad Al-Shaikh tribe, who are said to be descendants of Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar, started at Eid but escalated on Thursday. That is when heavy fighting started. The whole area from the beginning of Zliten (on the Tripoli side) up to the shrine is bullet ridden — 14.5mm and above. There were tank shells in the main square. There was an attempt to exhume the body but those involved did not found anything till four metres down. The overnight explosions were so loud that it brought back memories of NATO bombing. Two mortars fell in Wadi Qaam, around 600 meters west of where I was camping. A petrol station was destroyed in the same area. There were tanks stationed on the checkpoints all the way from Zliten to Tripoli.
  13. http://www.mathaba.net/news/?x=631175 Libya`s heretic occupation regime continues destruction of Sufi Muslim holy sites, given that Muammar Qaddafi is a Sufi, and Sufism is the `Heart of Islam` The Al-Sha’ab suffi shrine, opposite the Radisson Blu Hotel in central Tripoli, has been demolished by heavy machinery, under the protection of the occupation regime's security forces. The occupation regime government has pretended that the measure is a "preventive" one to prevent vandalism by "Salafist extremists", but in reality the regime itself is a heretic extremist Al-Qaida regime, which aims to remove all vestiges of non-"Islamist" Islam, i.e. Quranic true Islam. Even the pro-regime media have voiced their suspicions that the destruction of the shrine has "some sort of official approval", given the obvious case since the security forces of the regime have protected the heavy machinery which was demolishing it. According to Reuters Middle East correspondent Hadeel Al-Shalchi on Twitter, the Ministry of the Interior gave consent for the demolition due to “evidence of black magic”, as they claim that some worshippers prayed at tombs on the site is "black magic" even though it is common Muslim practice to pray for the dead. In reality, the ordinary Muslim masses of Libya are in stark opposition to the imposed foreign dictatorship which has forced one million Libyans -- a quarter of the population -- into exile, while over one hundred thousand have been killed, and tens of thousands remain in unofficial "jails" where they are tortured. The "Deputy Prime Minister" of the occupation regime, Mustafa Abushagur also took to the U.S. social networking spying and data-mining site Twitter to say “the destruction of shrines and mosques is a crime. those who commit these crimes will be held responsible… I asked the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence to intervene yesterday but they did not do their duty to protect these sites.” This highlights the growing chaos in Libya as the regime and its foreign supporters and local traitors are fraught with increasing attacks against them, and seeing Qadhafi and "Greens" behind every stone and tree, and indeed everywhere within militias and government departments, in spite of their attempts to exclude them. Evil Puppet Magarief The long-time terrorist Mohammed Magarief, head of the so-called National Salvation Front of Libya who was financed by the CIA for the past 30 years and behind much of the terrorist incidents carried out against Libyans during the past three decades, and who is now the "president" of the so-called "General National Congress", released a similar statement via Twitter condemning such attacks, again showing that the regime is carrying out the attacks while publicly denying its role. Magarief described the desecration of Sufi shrines in Tripoli and Zliten as “disgraceful acts” and those involved as “criminals” who would be pursued. Tensions were very high at the scene, with fights between those attempting to prevent the desecration and destruction of yet another sacred location and historic building, and the regime's forces took action against anyone taking photographs, asking them to leave and using force against those who refused to leave the scene. This is not the first attack on the Masjid. An attempt earlier this year to destroy the shrine resulted in a demonstration outside the hotel and the regime's security forces being brought in to protect the tomb. However, the regime is now short of security forces and is facing a rising rebellion across the country, even though the demographics have changed significantly with the import of foreign mercenaries, and the detention of tens of thousands, and forcing one million into exile. Islamist heretics have destroyed a number of Sufi shrines in Libya since the so-called "revolution of the rats". On Thursday night, the shrine of Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri in Zliten was also attacked. In March, they tried to destroy one of the most important shrines in the country, that of Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri in Zliten and in June the Sahaba Masjid in Derna was destroyed in a bomb attack. Journalists Arrested Three journalists from the Al-Assema television station were detained by the occupation "rat" regime's so-called "Supreme Security Committee" (SSC) Saturday afternoon in relation to their coverage of the destruction of the Al-Sha’ab Masjid in Tripoli, which the regime is trying to cover up. The incident, yet another a clear violation of press freedom in Libya, has been widely condemned even by the "rat revolutionaries" as contrary to the principles of the so-called "17 February rat revolution." Islamist heretics, which make up a large party of the "rats" vandalised the Masjid early Saturday morning, apparently because of its status as a venerated Sufi shrine. Muammar Qaddafi is a Sufi, as are many Libyans who believe that the Al-Fateh Revolution embodied the values and principles of true Islam. The shrine was then completely destroyed on the orders of the occupation "rat" regime's so-called "Interior Ministry". The SSC sought to cordon off the site throughout the demolition and were hostile to any attempts by journalists to cover the situation. Following their coverage of the event, Al-Assema’s managing director, Nabil Shebani, together with two reporters, were called to the SSC for interrogation. Shebani was released late this evening, but it is not yet known if the two reporters have also been freed, subjected to torture, or joined the tens of thousands of other citizens being held in illegal detention and torture centers. Rat Divisions The rats' "General National Congress" summoned the "Prime Minster", "Defense Minister" and "Interior Minister" for questioning over the shrine desecrations, in mounting evidence of internal turmoil over the anti-Muslim policies of the neo-liberal heretical "islamist" regime which seeks to impose the "New World Order" on Libya as well as the great fears of the return of the Libyan people to power once they succeed to eject foreign invaders and eliminate the Arab traitors. The three key "ministers" of the occupation regime were to be questioned by its "Congress" this morning, Sunday, over their handling of the recent desecration of shrines by what the regime call "Salafist extremists" but are in reality heretics which make up the forces which the regime relied upon in order to come to power by force of terror and arms. The army "Chief of Staff" and several other rat officials have also been called. The failure of the "ministries" of Defense and Interior to prevent the destruction of the holy sites has drawn widespread condemnation across Libya. Mustafa Abushagur “The destruction of shrines and mosques is a crime. Those who commit these crimes will be held responsible”, echoed "Deputy Prime Minister" Mustafa Abushagur said also on Saturday. “I asked the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence to intervene yesterday but they did not do their duty to protect these sites.” Saturday morning, the Al-Sha’ab Sufi shrine opposite the Radisson Blu hotel in Tripoli was attacked and demolished under the protection of the occupation regime's "security" forces, little more than a day after one of Libya’s most important Sufi shrines, that of the Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri in Zliten, was badly damaged following clashes that left at least three people dead, as reported by Mathaba News and other media. Following the attack on the Tripoli shrine, heavy machinery moved in to complete the demolition, reportedly to excavate the tombs inside and remove the bodies of those who would have resisted all foreign occupation of Libya and islamist heresy, so as to attempt to prevent even the example of past dead heroes. The rat occupation regime's "Supreme Security Committee" sought to shut off the site throughout the process, and at least three journalists were called in for interrogation by the so-called committee following their coverage of the destruction, which the SSC had sought to prevent. In his address Saturday evening, arch-terrorist Magarief admitted that there had been official collusion in the attacks, saying that those responsible “are unfortunately aligned with some in the Supreme Security Committee and some ex-revolutionaries”. Earlier it was suggested that both the Interior Minister and the Minister of Defence had been fired over their handling of the attacks, although their summons before the Congress appears to confirm that this is not the case. Resistance to Demolition By Sunday crowds of popular masses had gathered at the site of the shrine to halt further demolition and theft of bodies from the tombs even though most of it had been destroyed. However, it is believed the regime's forces will finish the job as soon as media coverage wanes and demonstrators return home. Demolition work at the Al-Sha’ab shrine in central Tripoli stopped while a group of protestors occupied the site today Sunday. The group, numbering no more than 30 or so, started their demonstration in fairly low-key fashion at Algeria Square at midday, standing in the middle of the roundabout with placards. Libyans are fearful to demonstrate since protesters are often shot by the occupation rat regime's "security" forces. Work restarted at the shrine Sunday morning, but the machinery was sitting at the roadside as the group stood amongst the rubble. The road remains closed for the entire stretch in front of the hotel, but many of the security personnel previously present have left, while those who remain seem uninterested by the protest and are making no attempt to clear the area, given the divisions within the rat regime over the issue. The atmosphere among the crowd of spectators on the pavement opposite is tense, and it is clear that some of those present are rats in favour of the demolition. A scuffle later broke out between the protestors and armed rats as they made efforts to restart demolition, shouts of “God is great” (Allahu Akbar) came from the crowd when the digger operator abandoned his attempts to continue his work. Sufi Leader Muammar Qadhafi Despite reports of journalists being arrested for attempting to cover the demolition yesterday, an Al-Jazeera camera crew was operating at the site uninhibited this afternoon, because the rat regime owes its existence to the fake and biased reports on the Qatari satellite channel. Qatar is the main Arab regime sponsoring the occupation of Libya, since its illegitimacy was constantly highlighted by Libyan Leader Muammar Qadhafi at Arab summits. Lies and Excuses Faced with mounting opposition after its attempts to destroy and desecrate the shrine and graves without any media coverage failed, the "Interior Ministry" of the rat occupation regime in Libya, sought to "explain" its position in "not intervening" to prevent the destruction which took place under the protection of the rat regime's "security" forces. The "Interior Ministry" under questioning claimed that it "did not want to risk violence by intervening." The shrine, one of the most important Sufi mosques in Tripoli and resting place of the holy man Sidi Al-Sha’ab, was attacked by islamist heretics under the protection of the rat regime's forces yesterday morning, Saturday. A digger then moved in to finish the demolition, overseen by personnel from the Interior Ministry’s Supreme Security Committee. Little more than a day earlier, one of Libya’s most important Sufi shrines, that of the Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri in Zliten, was badly damaged following clashes that left at least three people dead. The Ministry’s Undersecretary, Omar Khadrawi denied that the "Interior Ministry" had authorised the demolition of the shrine in Tripoli, but said its "Supreme Security Comittee" were deployed to "prevent any fighting between those carrying out the demolition and anyone who wanted to stop them”. Yesterday, Reuters reported that the Interior Ministry had authorised the operation, in a rare piece of factual western media reporting. The failure of the responsible officials to prevent the destruction and instead to oversee and protect its rat supporters and forces engaged in the destruction has drawn widespread criticism across Libya, with even many younger people expressing their anger. Yesterday, a senior government minister who asked to remain anonymous told rat media in Libya that there had been calls from inside the rat Congress to sack both the rat Interior Minister and the rat Defence Minister. “That decision was put on hold because the (rat) government only has at most two more weeks before its term expires” (and is replaced by the rat "congress"), the rat minister said. Kaffir Rat Mufti Hypocrisy Hypocrite: "Grand Mufti" A statement from the so-called Grand Mufti, rat-appointed Sheikh Sadeq al-Ghariani, released by the "Fatwa Office" today Sunday, condemned the desecration of graves and holy sites, which it described as “not religiously permissable” and “a violation of the sanctity of the dead”. This comes against the backdrop of recent attacks on Sufi shrines, and continued attempts to demolish Tripoli’s Al-Sha’ab shrine, with the backing of the rat Ministry of the Interior. The statement said that it was forbidden to desecrate graves, whether they belong to Muslims or non-Muslims, and stressed that anyone who does so contravenes the teachings of both the Qu’ran and the Hadith. This is well-known by any Muslim and does not require a "Grand Mufti" to state the obvious, however, the statement was clearly aimed at rats who have no understanding of even the most basic tenets and precepts of Islam, let alone Sharia. To attempt to quell the green popular national resistance and give sanctity to the Protector of islamist heretics and terrorist traitors, NATO, the "Grand Mufti" statement also contained a "reminder" that "the use of weapons is forbidden, other than under state (rat regime) authority" and also "urged the (rat) government to do eveything within its power to achieve security and stability (for rats and their foreign masters).

  15. Sufi shrine attacks “cannot be tolerated” says UNESCO chief http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13428 By Tom Westcott. London, 29 August: The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has demanded an immediate end to the destruction of Sufi Shrines in Zlitan, Mistrata and Tripoli. In a statement released yesterday, Bokova said: “Destroying places of religious and cultural significance cannot be tolerated.” The UNESCO Director continued: “I am deeply concerned about these brutal attacks on places of cultural and religious significance. Such acts must be halted, if Libyan society is to complete its transition to democracy. For this, we need dialogue and mutual respect.” Bokova welcomed the government’s clear condemnation of the attacks but called upon all Libyan authorities to exercise their responsibility to protect the country’s cultural heritage, preserving this for future generations. She said: “Libya’s future prospects depend on its inhabitants’ ability to build a participatory democracy, that respects the rights and the heritage of all its citizens.” In a statement released earlier this year, Bokova had said that “during the past year, Libyans have shown their unfailing commitment to the protection of their cultural heritage, demonstrating that such heritage cannot be held hostage to local or international dissent and conflict.” Unfortunately, as Lawyers for Justice in Libya have observed, more damage has been done to the country’s heritage in the past few days than during the whole six months of armed conflict. Bokova has indicated that UNESCO stands ready to provide assistance to protect and rehabilitate these recently-damaged sites. The irony is that only at the start of this month an agreement between Libya and UNESCO was signed, launching a programme for the protection of Libya’s cultural heritage sites http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13530 Anti-extremism demonstration draws hundreds in Tripoli Tripoli, 31 August: A demonstration against the recent attacks on buildings by Salafist extremists took place this evening in Tripoli’s Martyrs’ Square. The event, which started at 6pm and lasted around an hour and a half, drew a crowd of around seven hundred people. It featured speakers from prominent Sufis, a spokesman from the League of Ulema, and Jamal Ben Issa, head of the Supreme Revolutionary Council. “We know who’s behind these attacks,” said the spokesman from the League of Ulema “I don’t even want to use the word.” Many in the crowd seemed sure that he was referring to islamist influence from Saudi Arabia. Another speaker, hwoever, was not so coy. He accused Saudis and Qataris of being responsible. Sadat El-Badri, the leader of Tripoli Local Council, was in the crowd, having made a speech on TV yesterday condemning the attacks. In his TV address he also called for an effective mechanism for disarming in Libya, saying that the police and army should be the only two armed groups in the country. He also called for the re-establishment of the judicial system and respect for the rule of law and human rights. Banners at the protest carried such slogans as “No to the imposition of dogma”, “Destroying mosques is un-Islamic”, “We live according to Sharia’a, extremism leads to ruin” and “How long will the state remain weak?” This is by far the largest demonstration since the attacks begun last week. Other meetings, organised via Facebook and Twitter, attracted crowds of dozens, rather than hundreds, although last week’s protest amongst the rubble of the Al-Sha’ab shrine, did succeed in halting the destruction, albeit temporarily
  16. Human Right Watch adds voice to condemnation of Sufi shrine attacks http://www.libyaherald.com/?p=13560 Tripoli, 1 September: The campaigning NGO Human Rights Watch has added its voice to calls on the government to prevent further attacks on Sufi shrines in Libya and to hold those responsible to account. “The government has failed both to protect sites sacred to Libyan Muslims who follow Sufi practices and to arrest those who have destroyed the tombs,” said Eric Goldstein deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “Inaction and impunity can only encourage further attacks.” To date, nobody is believed to have been arrested in connection with the attacks, which have taken place in Tripoli, Zliten and Misrata in the last fortnight. HRW also voiced considerable concern over the possible complicity of members of the security services in the attacks, together with the interior minister. On 28 August, Interior Minister Fawzi Abdelal said that forces under his authority would not intervene to protect Sufi sites if it meant using force against extreme Islamist groups, and that the matter should be solved amongst the religious groups themselves. “If all shrines in Libya are destroyed so we can avoid the death of one person [in clashes with security forces], then that is a price we are ready to pay,” he was quoted as saying. “A government should not, in the name of avoiding clashes, give a carte blanche to the forces of violent intolerance,” Goldstein said. “Central authorities should be reining in – rather than empowering – the armed groups operating outside the law.” It is not known whether Abdelal made this announcement because it is what he believed or because he had lost control of the Supreme Security Committee, who had either refused orders to prevent the desecrations or even had a role in authorising them in the first place. The interior minister, who briefly tendered his resignation on Sunday before withdrawing it on Tuesday, has denied all allegations of complicity in authorising the attacks. The desecrations have shocked many Libyans, who have vocally expressed their anger over the incidents both on the ground and on social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter. The attacks have also been condemned by senior figures across Libya’s political, religious and civil society, including National Congress Speaker Mohammed Magarief; Grand Mufti Sheikh Sadiq Al-Ghariani; the League of Libyan Ulema; and Lawyers for Justice in Libya.
  17. Ultraconservative Salafists Destroy Sufi Landmarks in Libya http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/09/04/ultraconservative-salafists-destroy-sufi-landmarks-in-libya.html A wave of bombings of historic mosques and shrines by ultraconservative Salafists has the postrevolution Libyan government fuming. Jamie Dettmer reports. TRIPOLI—Salafists—ultraconservative Muslims—behind the recent wave of sectarian bombings and the destruction of historic mosques and shrines—say they aim to rid Libya of all Sufi landmarks by the end of the year. Now they are turning their attention to women, posting flyers at universities and private schools, insisting male and female students be segregated The flyers and Salafist websites—some headquartered in Saudi Arabia—chillingly warn female students on Libyan campuses to avoid tight-fitting clothes, insisting that they must cover up and wear the hijab. The surging attacks on Libya’s Sufi mosques and libraries—the most brazen came on Aug. 25 when a well-known Tripoli Masjid was bulldozed—have been encouraged by a prominent Saudi imam. Sheik Muhammad Al-Madkhalee has issued a fatwa praising the desecration of Sufi graves and urging Libyan Salafists to do more to clear the North African country of any taint of Sufi worship. Al-Madkhalee, who teaches at the Saudi-government-funded Islamic University of al-Madinah al-Munawarah in Medina, has a particular loathing about the mixing of men and women in educational establishments and, in early 2011, cautioned against men even teaching the Quran to women who are not members of their family. He counsels that a woman student whose head is covered can still seduce a devout teacher with “a single glance.” The Libyan government has complained to Riyadh about Al-Madkhalee, pointing out to the Saudi government that he receives state funds. The complaint, passed on by Libya's grand mufti, Sheik Sadek al-Ghariani, warns that Al-Madkhalee’s anti-Sufi fatwa is viewed by Tripoli as meddling in the internal affairs of Libya. The Saudis so far have failed to respond, Libyan government officials tell The Daily Beast. Salafis, who follow literalist and strict approaches to Islam, abhor the “heretical” trappings and less austere practices of Sufi Muslims. They claim worshipping at graves and shrines is un-Islamic and idolatrous and abhor the Sufi use of music and dance. Most Libyans follow a mainstream form of Sunni Islam, but the country has a significant number of adherents to mystical Sufi traditions, although exact numbers are not known, and Sufism has played a major part in the country’s history. Sufi brotherhoods were significant in the religious revival that swept North Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries, and Sufis were at the forefront of Libyan resistance in the 1930s to the Italian colonial regime. The continued assaults risk triggering widespread violence and undermining Libya’s shaky transition to democracy, which has been threatened already by ethnic and tribal clashes. The increase in brazen attacks on Sufi mosques, including the blatant broad daylight bulldozing of the well-known Sidi Sha'ab Masjid in the center of Tripoli, have infuriated Libya’s new Parliament, the General National Congress, and comes only one month after the first elections in 50 years. In those elections in July, radical Islamists fared poorly. Alarmed government officials say the Salafists are getting stronger and admit that elements of the security forces may be colluding in the demolitions of mosques and the desecration of the graves of Sufi sages and scholars. There’s growing fear also that the government is powerless to fight well-armed groups of Salafists, whose influence has spread rapidly in Libya since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi more than a year ago. According to a tribal leader in the western desert, Salafists have recently recruited more than 300 young rebels in the town of Ubari. “They have become disillusioned since the revolution and have no jobs, and radical Islam channels their frustrations and grievances,” he says. He declined to be named for this article, fearing Salafist retribution. There have been reports also of Salafists recruiting strongly beyond their traditional strongholds of Benghazi and Derna in the towns of Al Kufrah, Sabha, and Ghat. In the wake of the August bulldozing of the Sha’ab Masjid, the interior minister, Fawzi Abdel-Al, said there was little his ministry could do to stop the attacks that began last January. The day before the Sha’ab Masjid was flattened, Salafists razed the 500-year-old tomb of Sufi saint Sidi Abd As-Salam Al-Asmar and a Masjid library in Zliten, a town 90 miles east of the Libyan capital. Abdel-Al told journalists: "If we use the security option to deal with this, we would have to use weapons against these groups, and these people have weapons. We cannot be blind to this. They are a big force in Libya in terms of members and weapons. I will not enter a losing battle and get people killed over a grave. If all the shrines in Libya are wiped out and we don’t lose one martyr ... that is a price we are willing to pay.”
  18. Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq and his grandmother: On a beautiful Fajr morning on the 22nd of Muharram in the year 846 A.H (June 7th 1442 CE), in the village of Tiliwaan, was born a man the ‘Aarifeen would forever praise and look to for spiritual growth. His name was Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isaa Al Barnoosi Al-Faasi, known as Az-Zarruq. His parents died while he was one week of age due to a horrible outbreak known as ‘Azzunah. His maternal grandmother Umm Al-Baneen, a woman he would always express absolute love and gratitude for, raised him. Umm Al-Baneen had memorized the Qur’aan and studied Islaam. She was a Zaahida and raised her beloved grandson as one as well. Imaam Az-Zarruq describes his grandmother as such: “She instructed me how to make Salaah and ordered me to do so at the age of five. At the same age she sent me to the kuttaab (Qur’anic School) and started teaching me about tawheed, tawakkul, eemaan, and deen in a curious method. One day she prepared food for me. When I came back from the Kuttaab for luch she said, ‘I have got nothing for you to eat. However, provision is in the treasure of the Almighty! Sit down and let us ask from Him!’ We stretched out our hands to the heavens and began praying to Allah. Then she said: ‘Go and look, aybe Allah has put something in the corner of the house.’ We began to search and how glad I was when I found the food! She said: ‘Come and let us thank Allah before we eat, so that our Lord may give us more from his Mercy!’ We thanked Allah and praised Him for an hour then we commenced eating. She used to do many times till I grew up.” He tells of another occasion: “Encouraging me to make Salah, she used to put a dirham on my pillow so that I might see it when I opened my eyes in the morning. She would say, ‘Make fajr then take the dirham.’ Her idea was that the dirham would gelp me to pray and keep me away from corruption and prevent me from looking at what is in other people’s hands when I desire to buy something.” He continues to write, “After I had learnt some chapters of the Qur’aan she began teaching me how to write and read...

He also wrote two works on the Qur’an; Sharh Surat Al Faatihah and Tafsir Al-Qur’aan. He wrote of his travels in two major works, Al-Kunnaash and Ar-Rihlah. Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlwi (radi Allahu anhu), in his book, "Bustan al-Muhaddithin", praises Hazrat Sayyidi Ahmed Zarooq (radi Allahu anhu), by describing him as follows: "Hazrat-e-Arfa wa Ah'la, Imaamul Ulema and Nizaamul Awliya (The Highly Exalted Shaikh, Leader of the Ulema and the Governor of the Awliya). This great Saint is also among the Abdaal Sab'a (The Seven Magnificent Abdaal) and is an authority amongst the Sufis. Among his illustrious students are personalities like Imaam Shamsudeen Lagaani and Imaam Shahabudeen Qastalaani (radi Allahu anhuma). The Saint was a master in Shari'ah, Haqiqat and all Mystical Facets. Some of his books can be consulted to gain a better appreciation of his immense qualities." Shah Abdul Aziz (radi Allahu anhu) further states: "In brief, the Saint was a man of exceptional attributes, to fully comprehend his qualities is indeed beyond comprehension." Shah Abdul Aziz (radi Allahu anhu), then quotes two sentences stated by Hazrat Ahmed Zarooq (radi Allahu anhu), which further highlights his greatness, "I indeed bless my (Mureeds) with tranquillity during times of difficulty and perplexity, when cruelty and evil oppresses them and in times of misery and fear. Therefore (during these times) call to me 'Ya Zarooq', I will immediately come to your assistance." It was said by the author of Tabaqaat Ash-Shaadhiliyyah Al-Kubraa about Imaam Zarruq in Cairo, “When the scholars and learned men of Egypt heard of his arrival they came to him and attended his lectures. He started teaching at Al-Azhar. About six thousand men used to attend his lectures from Cairo and its suburbs in Al-Azhar. He became head of the Maalikis and their department at the University. A high well-made chair was specially placed for him on which he used to sit and dictate his lessons. This chair still exists at the Western Quarter. He was of great power and influence with the Egyptian princes and was always welcomed by all of them.” Regarding Shaykh az-Zarruq's move from Cairo to Libya: Why Imaam Az-Zarruq chose Misurata is not absolutely known. Ibn Naasir in his “Rihlah” wrote, “Az-Zarruq was asked for his reason for moving to Misurata and he responded thus, ‘This is a matter beyond thought, not accompanied by any determination nor decided for any particular reason that we know. It is a mere accident whose being has appeared and whose existence has become real, obeying what Allah demands.” After establishing himself in Misurata he traveled frequently to Algiers and Egypt. He gave lectures and busied himself with the remembrance of Allah. In 894 he made Hajj for his third time. On his way back he lectured in Al-Azhar and visited old companions. He stopped in a town called Al-Minyaa, giving lectures and reviving the Islamic spirit. On the 18th of Safar 899 AH, Shaykh Zarruq died while in the state of Khalwah at the age of 54. The community he lead built a large Zaawiyah for him and his students. Many of his students, who are principally Shaadhili, started a sub-order known as the Zarruqiyyah.
