    To Whom Do We Complain?

The ignorant among us complain to people about Allah, and this is the highest degree of ignorance. If one knew his Lord, he would never complain about Him; and if knew the (reality of) people, he would not complain to them. One of the predecessors saw a man complaining to another man about his poverty and dire necessity, so he said to him, “O you! By Allah, you have done nothing but complain about He who has mercy for you, to someone who has no mercy for you.” A poet said: When you complain to a son of Adam, verily you complain about the Most Merciful, to the one who does not have any pity. On the contrary, a person who is profoundly knowledgeable about Allah complains to Allah alone, and never to the people. He complains about the causes because he knows the verses: “And whatever of misfortune befalls you it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.” (Qur’an, 42:30) “Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself.” (Qur’an, 4:79) “(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: ‘From where does this come to us?’ Say (to them), ‘It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds).’ And Allah has power over all things.” (Qur’an, 3:165) The lowest of people complain about Allah to His creatures, while the highest of people complain about their own-selves to Allah
  5. The Hadith of intention is usually the first in most books of Hadith. Ibn Daqiq Al-Id expounds on it in his explanation of Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith. Umar Bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “Actions are but by intention and every man shall have but that which he intended. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His messenger, his migration was for Allah and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) This Hadith is great in its benefit and importance. It has been said that Islam revolves around it. Some scholars said it is one-third of knowledge because actions involve the heart, tongue and limbs. So the intention of the heart is one-third of that. Other scholars said Islam is encompassed in three Ahadith: This one, the Hadith “The Halaal is clear, the Haraam is clear and between them are doubtful matters...,” and the Hadith “Whoever innovates in this religion that which is not from it will have his actions rejected (by Allah).” The word “by” (in the sentence “actions are but by intention”) means that the acceptance and correctness of any action depends upon the intention behind it. An action which is apparently good, such as giving money in charity, will be rejected if the intention behind it is wrong. Giving charity to show off is one such example. The Prophet (peace be upon him) narrated from Allah that if a person performs an act for Allah’s sake and also for the sake of someone else, then Allah will reject the deed entirely and leave the whole of that deed for the partner the person made (with Allah). This shows us how grave the sin of Shirk is – it is the only sin that Allah will never forgive. In the Hadith, the words “shall have” means that the person will be rewarded only for what he intended. If a person did the Hijrah with a wrong intention, then he would not be rewarded with Hijrah (for Allah’s sake). The word “actions” refers to those actions which are part of the Shariah of Islam. Thus, any action of the Shariah – such as Wudhu, Ghusl, Tayammum, Salah, Zakat, fasting, Haj, I’tikaf, or any other act of worship – will not be accepted and rewarded unless it is performed with the correct intention.

    What Does Isti’Adhah Mean?

Isti’adhah is to say: A’ooudhu billahi min-ash-shaitaan-ir-rajeem. It means, “I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Satan.” Allah’s refuge is sought from Shaitan to prevent him from affecting our religious or worldly affairs, or hindering us from adhering to what we are commanded, or luring us into what we are prohibited from. Only Allah is able to prevent the evil of Satan from touching the son of Adam. Allah allowed us to be lenient and kind with human devils (sinners and wrongdoers among human beings) because soft nature may refrain such sinners from the evil they are indulging in. However, Allah required us to seek refuge from the evil of Satan because Satan neither accepts bribes nor does kindness affect him, for he is pure evil. Thus, only He Who created Satan is able to stop his evil. This meaning is reiterated in only three verses in the Qur’an. Allah said in Surat Al-A`raf: “Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish (i.e. don’t punish them).” (Qur’an, 7:199) This verse is about dealing with human beings. Allah then said in the next verse: “And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaytan, then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower.” (Qur’an, 7: 200) Allah also said: “The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better, then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient – and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of happiness in the Hereafter, i.e. Paradise and of a high moral character) in this world. And if an evil whisper from Shaytan tries to turn you away (from doing good), then seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.” (Qur’an, 41:34-36) – Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir of Surah Fatihah

Love For Prophet: The Sahabah Way

No matter how much we write about the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we cannot fairly describe their merits, virtues and excellence. The best of generations to ever live in this world, they were chosen by Allah to accompany His Last Messenger. They sacrificed their wealth, families and lives defending and propagating the truth. Embracing Islam and then being groomed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) transformed a community that came from the ruthless deserts into a fine people with exceptional character and behavior. The men who would bury their daughters alive turned into fathers who rejoiced at the birth of daughters and who took extra care in bringing them up. The Ahadith that throw light on their lifestyles and virtues are plenty. One such aspect was their unconditional obedience to Allah and His Messenger. Faith was deeply ingrained in their hearts. They knew the Messenger did not instruct them except based on Allah’s revelation. When Urwa Bin Mas’ud came to negotiate with the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the incident that’s popularly known as the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, he witnessed firsthand the attitude of the Companions towards Muhammad (peace be upon him). He went back to the Quraish and gave that powerful description: “O people! By Allah, I have been to the kings and to Caesar, Khosrau (Persian emperor) and An-Najashi, yet I have never seen any of them respected by his courtiers as much as Muhammad is respected by his companions. By Allah, if he spat, the spittle would fall in the hand of one of them (i.e. the Prophet’s companions) who would rub it on his face and skin; if he ordered them, they would carry out his order immediately; if he performed ablution, they would struggle to take the remaining water; and when they spoke, they would lower their voices and would not look at his face constantly out of respect.” (Al-Bukhari, 3/50, no. 891) The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not establish a relationship of a master and disciples. The term Sahabah is not used without meaning. The Sahabah literally lived as the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him). When a stranger would come to Madina, he would not recognize who the Prophet was if he was sitting in a group, because there were no special seats for him, no elevated chairs that would distinguish him from others, and to be sure no special clothes indicating that he was in fact the ruler of Madina. Despite this humility, the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not diminish. The Companions gave the Prophet his due right and respect. As preceded, the kings of Romans and Persians were not obeyed and followed as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was. For instance, when the law on prohibition of alcohol came down, there was no need of enforcement agencies or security personnel. One man went into the streets announcing the prohibition. The Companions who were drinking alcohol at that time, spit it out from their mouths; Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who was serving alcohol threw the wine and broke the tumblers; and the streets of Madina overflowed with alcohol because everyone, including the businessmen who traded in alcohol, spilled out their reserves onto the streets. (See Ahmad, 1:53; Ibn Kathir, vol. 3, pg. 258-259) Or consider the legislation of Hijab. Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the verses of Hijab came down the women tore their cloth and covered themselves. (See Al-Bukhari) They would come and go to the masjid unrecognized. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say about assigning a special door for women in the mosque. “It is better if we leave this door for women.” This is all the Prophet said and Ibn Umar never entered through that door till he died. Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw men and women together on the road upon their departure from the mosque. He said to the women: “Hold back a bit. You do not have to walk in the middle of the road. You may keep to the sides.” The narrator of the Hadith commented that women after that would come so close to the buildings that their dresses would sometimes cling to the walls.” (Abu Dawood) The narrations are too many to mention. But the vital question is: Why is our attitude so different from that of the Companions? ○ Their faith was deep-rooted. Allah says, “But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad, peace be upon him) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” (Qur’an, 4:65) ○ They implemented the Qur’an. Allah praises the Sahabah’s eagerness to obey Allah in the Qur’an: “…they say, ‘We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).’ ” (Qur’an, 2:285) ○ They knew obeying the Prophet would earn them Allah’s love. Say (O Muhammad, peace be upon him, to mankind): “If you (really) love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an, 3:31) May Allah guide us to the Iman of the Companions.

Winter: Best Season For A Believer

The righteous people of the past would rejoice with the approach of winter. Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali mentions its virtues in his book Lata’if Al-Ma’arif (pg. 276) Winter is the best season for the believer because Allah strengthens his practice by making worship easy for him. The believer can easily fast during the day without suffering from hunger and thirst. The days are short and cold, and he doesn’t feel the hardship of fasting. As for praying at night, due to winter’s long nights, one can have his share of sleep and then wake up to pray. He can recite the Qur’an that he usually does in a day while having enough time to sleep. So, it becomes possible to fulfill the interests of both – his religion and the comfort of his body. Abdullah Bin Mas’ud said: “Welcome to winter! Blessings descend in it. Its nights are long to pray, and its days are short to fast.” When it was winter, Ubayd Bin Umayr would say: “O people of the Qur’an! Your nights are now long for you to recite. So, recite! Your days are now short for you to fast. So, fast! Night prayer in the winter equals fasting during the day in the summer.” This is why Mu’adh wept on his deathbed. He said: “I weep because I will miss the thirst I felt when I fasted, praying at night during the winter, and sitting knee to knee with the scholars during the gatherings of knowledge.”
  9. Khawlah Bint Hakim narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever arrives somewhere and says: ‘I seek refuge with Allah’s complete Words from the evil He has Created (A’oodhu bi-Kalimaathillaahi- Ath-Thaammaathi min-Sharri maa Khalaq),’ nothing will harm until he leaves that place.” (Sahih Muslim, no. 2708) In Taysir Al-Aziz Al-Hamid (p. 146), Sulayman Bin Abdullah relates that Al-Qurtubi commented on this by saying: “And this is true and real, and I believe in it due to the textual proof as well as my own experience. Since I heard this narration, I would constantly act upon it and nothing was able to harm me until I left it. One night, I was stung by a scorpion in Al-Mahdiyyah (a province in Tunisia). So, I thought to myself until I realized that I had forgotten to seek refuge using these words.” In Al-Qawl Al-Mufid (1/155), Al-Uthaymeen commented on this Hadith: “This protection is from all human and jinn devils – whether they are visible or invisible – until the person leaves that place. And there is no way that what is described in this narration will not take place, as these are the words of the truthful one who is believed (i.e. the Messenger of Allah)! However, if what is mentioned in this narration does not take place, it is because of a preventative factor and not because of a deficiency in the method itself or the narration. This also applies to anything that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned as a Shar’ee method in which the desired outcome is not achieved. So, this is not because of a fault in the method, and is rather because of the presence of an obstacle that is blocking the desired outcome. For example, reciting ‘Al-Fatihah’ for a sick person is a form of healing. Some people recite it and find that the sick person is not healed. This is not because of a deficiency in this method, and is instead because there is something present that is preventing this method from bringing about its desired effect. Another example is mentioning Allah before having sexual intercourse in order to prevent Satan from harming the future child. Some people will mention Allah and find that Satan still ends up harming the child due to something that is preventing this effect from being achieved. So, you should check yourself to figure out what the obstacle is so that you can remove it and experience the effect of the method.”
