Concept Of Revivalist (Mujaddid) In Islam

Syyeduna Abu-Hurayrah Radi ALLAHu Anho narrates that Syyeduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi Wa Sallam said: ان الله تعالى يبعث لهذه الامة على رأس كلّ مائة سنة من يجدد لها دينها Verily Allah will send at the beginning of every century such a person for this Ummah who will rejuvenate and restore their religion (Deen). Above stated Hadith is recorded by the following Hadith Masters: Imam Abu-Da'ood, and Imam Hakim in his Mustadrak, Imam Bayhaqee in his Al-Ma'rifah, reported by the great Hadith Master Imam Jalal al-Deen Suyootee in his al-Jama'e al-Sagheer fi Hadith al-Basheer wal-Nazeer, Imam Bayhaqee also narrates in his Al-Mudkhal and Imam Hasan bin Sufyan and Imam Bazar both in their Musnads, Imam Tabranee in his al-Mu'jam al-al-Awsat, Imam Ibn 'Adee in his Kamil and Imam Abu-Na'eem in his al-Hil'ya Commenting on the authenticity of the above Hadith Shareef, Allama Imam Isma'eel Haqqee records in his marginal notes of Siraj al-Muneer Sharh Jame'h al-Sagheer: "My Shaykh said that there is a consensus of the Hadith Masters that this Hadith is Sahih." Amongst the later Hadith Masters that verified this Hadith Shareef as Sahih are Imam Allama Abul-Fadl Iraqee and Imam Allama ibn Hajr and amongst the predecessor Masters, Imam Hakim author of Sahih al-Mustadrak and Imam Bayhaqee author of al-Mudkhal. Imam Jalaludeen Suyooti in his Mirqat al-Saood's marginal notes of Sunan Abu-Da'ood records: اتفق الحفاظ على تصحيحه It is a consensus of the Muhadditheen (Hadith Masters) that this Hadith is Sahih. In other the words, when there comes a period in which there is a shortage of knowledge and a deterioration in following of the Sunnah; when there is an increase in false innovations and ignorance; then Almighty Allah will send a person at the beginning or end of every century who will show the difference between Sunnah and Bid'at. He will refute and destroy false innovations and will fear none but Almighty Allah. He will very bravely and sincerely hoist the flag of Deen-e-Muhammadi (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam). Such a person is known as a "Mujaddid" (Reviver) of Deen. The author of the book, "Siraj al-Muneer Sharh Jame'h al-Sagheer", has explained who a Mujaddid is in the following words: "In other words, to revive the Deen is to revive those teachings of the Quran and Sunnah that are being destroyed and to give command according to the Quran and Sunnah." Allamah Munaadi (Alaihir raHma) states: "A Mujaddid is one who separates Sunnah from Bid'ah and one who degrades the status of the Ahle Bid'ah." Why does a Mujaddid come after 100 years? A Mujaddid is sent after every 100 years because after every century the surroundings, the environment, the manner of thinking and ways of the people tend to pass through a massive transformation. It has been stated in the Hadith of Bukhari Shareef that during the latter stages of the Prophet's (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) physical life, one night, after performing Esha Salaah, he stood up and said, u"Should I inform you of the importance of this night? From this night onwards, right up to the end of a 100 years, that person who is alive on the earth (presently) will not be alive." The concept of Tajdeed (Revival) of Deen: The correct meaning or concept of Tajdeed (Revival) is that one or more qualities are found in a person through which Ummat-e-Muhammadiyya benefit religiously e.g. imparting Islamic education, lecturing, and propagation, informing and forbidding people of evil and assisting the truthful. The Qualities of a Mujaddid: 1) It is not necessary that a Mujaddid be from the Ahle-Bayt as claimed by the Shias and other sects 2) It is not necessary that a Mujaddid be a Mujtahid 3) What is absolutely necessary is that he be a Sunni with correct beliefs according to the Ahle-Sunnah wa Jamah 4) He be profound Aalim of Deen 5) He be a Master and embodiment of most of the Sciences of Knowledge 6) He be an outstanding Scholar of his time 7) His services for the Deen be purely for the pleasure of Allah and His Rasool and not for greed of wealth and other worldly gain 8) He be fearless of opposition and rulers of his time 9) He will not act or give verdicts to please any person besides Allah and His Rasool 10) He will not fear speaking or advocating Truth in all circumstances 11) He will not use Religion to gain worldly fame 12) He will be a very pious and Allah fearing person 13) He will perfect mixture of the Sharee'ah and Taree'qah 14) He will not tolerate any opposition to the Sharee'ah 15) And according to 'Allama Imam Isma'il Haqqee, it is necessary for a Mujaddid that both in the last portion of the century he was born in and the beginning of the century he passes away in, he be famous and be a fountain and focal authority of religion for the Ulama of his time. 16) It is also necessary for a Mujaddid that the Scholars (Ulama) of his time observe, benefit and be convinced of his impeccable lifestyle and profound knowledge and hence acknowledge and announce in public that he is a Mujaddid. 17) Therefore it is important that a Mujaddid be a perfect embodiment and Alim of both the external (Sharee'ah) and internal (Spiritual) sciences of Knowledge promoting the protecting the Sunnah and fighting and destroying Bid'ah. Identification of a Mujaddid: Shaykh al-Islam Imam Badr al-Deen Abdal states in his book, Risalah Mardiyyah fi al-Nusrat Madhab al-Ash'riyyah: "A Mujaddid is recognized by the strong opinion of his contemporary noble Ulama who greatly benefit from his condition and prolific Knowledge. He will be an embodiment of both external and internal sciences of Knowledge supporting and defending the Sunnah and challenging and defeating Bid'ah." Can their be more than one Mujaddid to a century? There can be more, and there has already been more than one Mujaddid to a Century. In the Hadith, the Arabic word that is used to explain the coming of the Mujaddid is in the singular tense, but according to the meaning, it is a plural as it has been explained in the Kitaabs of Usool-e-Fiqh. Allamah Mulla Ali bin Sultan Qaari (Alaihir rahmah) who is also said to be the Mujaddid of the 11th Century says, "From the words, not only one single person is implied, but the implication is towards a group of people, from amongst whom each one is reforming a single type of knowledge or all types of knowledge in his city." So, Sometimes a single Mujaddid is born in a century and sometimes there are two or a group in one given century when a consensus cannot be reached on one person. There are time when an Alim be in the middle of century who may be more knowledgeable and excellent than the Mujaddid, but he will not be classified as a Mujaddid because he did not get the early stages of the century. This is so because generally when the century ends many of the great Ulama also pass away and great dissension and Fitna engulfs the Ummah. Bid'ah and religious corruption creeps into the masses who tend to deviate from the pristine teachings of Islam. At this crucial period there is a great need for revival and renaissance in matters of Deen. At this critical time Allah sends such an Aalim who removes all evil and religious corruption from the Ummah by publicly announcing and refuting them. He will be the best of people and most awesome amongst the dignitaries of his time. 3. The Faza'il (Excellence and Benefit) of the names "AHMED" and "MUHAMMAD" is mentioned in many Ahadith. 1. The Holy Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said, "Keepthe names (of your children) on my name and not on my Kunniyat (Title)." 2. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said,"If a son is born to you and out of love and respect for me and toobtain the blessings of my name, you keep the child's name 'Muhammad',then the father and child will both enter Jannah." (Ibne Askar andHussein bin Ahmed) 3. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said,"On the day of Qiyamah two persons will be summoned to the Court ofALLAH. The verdict would be - 'take them both to Jannah!' They wouldsay, 'O Almighty ALLAH! We have performed no good deed to entitle us toenter Jannah!' ALLAH will command again, 'Take them to Jannah because Ihave taken an oath that I will not put any person in Jahannam (Hell)whose name is Ahmed or Muhammad.'" (Hafiz Abu Tahir Salfi and IbneBakeer) Elaborating on the above Hadith, A'la Hazrat Imam Ahmed Rida (RadiALLAHu Ta'ala Anhu) states: "That person is a Mu'min (Believer) andaccording to the Quran, the Hadith and the Sahaba, a Mu'min is he whohas sound and correct beliefs of the Ahle Sunnah Wa Jamah, that is,'Sunni Sahih-ul-Aqida'. On the contrary, as for those who are misledand possess incorrect Aqaid are, according to Hadith Shareef, dogs ofJahannam whose deeds are rejected, and even if they are innocentlymurdered between Hajre Aswad and Makame Ibraheem and have Sabr andhopes for reward from ALLAH, then too ALLAH will not show any mercytowards them but sentence them to Hell." (Dara Qutni, Ibne Maja,Baihaqi, etc.) 4. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam states:"My Lord has mentioned to me, 'I swear by My Sight and greatness thatwhosoever is named after you shall never be destroyed by the Fire ofHell.'" (Hilyah Abu Naeem) 5. Ameerul Mu'mineen Sayyiduna Ali (Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anhu) narratesthat Rasullulah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam states: "Thosewho sit in a company and eat food, and if there is a person amongstthem by the name of Ahmed or Muhammad, then that entire group wouldreceive the blessing of ALLAH twice daily." (Hafiz Abne Bakeer, Walami,Musnad Abee Saeed Naqqash, Ibne Adi Kamil) Shortly, in homes where persons with these sacred names live, ALLAH blesses that home twice daily. 6. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam states:"What would you lose if in your homes there is one, two or threeMuhammad's." (Tabkat ibne Sad) 7. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam states:"When a group sit in consultation and if a person by the name ofMuhammad is amongst them, but is not included in such a meeting, ALLAHdoes not bestow Barakah in such a meeting." (Taraifi, Ibne Jozi) 8. The Glorious Prophet of ALLAH Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallamsaid: "He who is blessed with three sons and does not name one Muhammadis indeed a Jahil (Ignorant)." (Tibrani, Kabeer) 9. The Holy Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said: "Whenyou name the child Muhammad, respect him, make place and accommodatehim in a gathering and do not accuse or curse him." (hakim, MusnadulFirdous, etc.) 10. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said:"When you name your son Muhammad, do not hit him, deprive him or robhim." (Musnad, Bazar) It is preferable (MustaHsan) to keep the child's name "Muhammad"alone and not to add any name to it because the excellence of thesacred name alone has been mentioned in the aHadith. (An Nooru WadDiya, pages 18 to 24)
  4. Mian Sher Muhammad Sharaqpuri was born in 1282 AH., or 1865 AD., in Sharaqpur (District Sheikhupura, Punjab). His father's name was Mian Azizuddin. He memorised Holy Quran in his early age. Later, he joined routine schooling. His uncle Mian Hamiduddin taught him Persian. He acquired spiritual lessons from Baba Amiruddin and achieved completion under his tutelary. Baba Amiruddin had granted him permission of making his own disciples. About his stature, his spiritual guide used to say: "If on the Day of Jugdment, Exalted Allah asked me what you have brought from the world, I will put forward Mian Sher Muhammad Sharaqpuri." Events before his Birth According to some tradition attributed to Mian Ghulam Muhammad, hadrat Khawaja Amir-ud-Din had a vision that a saint will be born in Sharqpur Sharif who will be known as Sher-e-Rabbani. After this vision Hadrat Khawaja Sahib started visiting Sharaqpur every year in a bid to find the divine creature and take him under the shroud of Silsila-e-Naqshbandia. In an other prediction as by Mr. Karam Shah of Hafizabad in his letter, he visited Sharqpur Sharif and saw an old man in Daira (circle) outside Sharqpur Sharif and asked for how long that peculiar condition was prevalent upon Hadrat Mian Sahib? The old man replied even before birth. Mr. Karam Shah exclaimed! How it was possible? He (old man) replied that a Faqir frequently visited the residential area (Mohalla) taking long breaths, as if trying to smell coming to this Mohallah; who would be dear to God. Asked in whose home? The Faqir pointed towards the house of Mian Aziz-ud-Din (father of Mian Sahib). According to compiler of this book the event quoted as prediction for the of a great personality has precedence among the earlier saints (auliya) e.g. Hadrat Khawaja Bayazid Bistami once came to the town of Khirqan prior to the birth of Hadrat Khawaja Abul Hassan Khirqani and while standing somewhere took long breaths and went into some kind of meditation (jazb). Seeing this, companions amazingly stated that this village happened to be inhabited by thieves and decoits. What are you looking for? Hadrat Khawaja replied that in this village of thieves, a boy will take birth whose light (noor) I can see between the earth and heavens. He will be born a hundred years after me. The second example (quoted by the compiler) is that of a prediction related to the birth of Hadrat Abdul Qadir Jillani. According to this prediction, Hadrat Sheikh Musa Soharwardi stated in Mukashifat-e-Aulia that once on Friday Harzat Junaid Bughdadi had a vision about the birth of Hadrat Abdul Qadir Jillani (i.e. five hundred years earlier). Birth of Hadrat Mian Sahib He was born in 1282 A.H and named as Sher Muhammad seven days after his birth. According to Sufi Muhammad Ibrahim, once Hadrat Mian Sahib himself told that living his childhood his ancestor hadrat Molana Maulvi Ghulam Rasool Sahib had let him ###### his tongue. And during first or second visit of the compiler to Sharqpur, the news had gained currency among the elders and aged that Hadrat Mian Sahib was a born saint (wali). Names of all are hard to recall, only one or two can be quoted. One is Mian Imam-ud-Din Monga (late) and the second one is hakeem Imam-ud-Din Sahib. Childhood and Early Education Early childhood of Hadrat Mian Sahib was similar to that of Hadrat Junaid Bughdadi. When sent to school (Maktab) he disliked the company of kids and preferred to sit alone. In just three or four years, he completed of Holy Quran and other religions books and acquired a pretty writing skill. As stated by Hakeem Ali Muhammad of Baloke quoting his father Hakeem Pir Bakhsh, every chapter (Sipara) given to Hadrat Mian Sahib by on its pages, Upon reprimand by the grandfather, Mian Sahib had no reply but to keep silent and cry. Modesty Mian Imam-ud-Din Goldsmith of Sharqpur states that in childhood Mian Sahib used to cover his head and face while walking through the streets of the town and women usually used to say that a girl had been born among them veiling his face. Aqility Mian Sahib was very fond of horse-riding in his childhood. Every mare he rode was easily tamed. People of Sharqpur used to describe Mian Sahib as a mentor of the mares. Once a wedding party came to Sharqpur with a lot ofmares. The party came to know that a boy lived in Sharqpur who had the capability to tame the most wild and unruly mares. Skills of Mian Sahib were tried with such a mare. The mare behaved like a slave and went wherever he commanded to go. The whole wedding party was greatly amased. Similarly, once Mian Sahib visited Chunian. A man brought a mare for his return journey. That mare was very rebellious. Mian Sahib touched the mare with hands and mounted on her. She completely obeyed the master. Passion for true love On returning from hajj, one Haji Jalal-ud-Din, Zaildar of the village Jora Ahl-e-Hadith narrated his accounts of the pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Hadrat Muhammad Sallalaho Alyhe Wasalam in a tone exclusive to spiritually perfect and devoted persons. Mian Sahib himself happened to be in kusur. He went to Jora along with the companions and met Haji Jalal-ud-Din. Hearing the conditions and state from Haji Jalal, which he had gone through, Mian Sahib went into such a state as he himself had experienced every thing. Haji Jala showed great respect and hospitality for Mian Sahib who stayed in his house for a night. Haji Jalal told her husband that quantity of butter was the same as usual, though milk was less, Afterwards Haji Jalal narrated that event on many occasions. Once he also went to Sharqpur Sharif where he got immense spiritual satisfaction. He stated that this place was not like other Khanqas. What is important to be noted is that the true love frees a human being from the criticism of comrades and strangers. Haji Jalal, firstly ignorant and secondly an Ahl-e-Hadith, and above all the amount of love of Mian Sahib that he himself went to see him. For Majnu (a legendary lover) kissed the dog’s feet, the public said, “What have you done?” he replied, this dog had walked through the lane of Laila (translation from Persian verse). Demis (Wisaal Sharif) Mian Sher Muhammad was strict observer and preacher of Quran and the Sunnah. He led a very simple life and blessed numerous people. He passed away on Rabi-ul-Awwal 2, 1347 AH., or August 20, 1928 and was laid to rest in Sharaqpur. He had numerous deputies out of whom four were prominent Syed Muhammad Ismail Karamanwale, Syed Noor-ul-Hassan Bukhari, Sahibzada Muhammad Umer and Mian Rehmat Ali. His younger brother Mian Ghulamullah Sharaqpuri succeeded him on his seat.
